How I Used ChatGPT and Google Keyword Planner to Boost Organic Search Traffic

Why keyword optimization matters
If you want more organic Google search traffic, an intentional keyword strategy is one of the fastest ways to get it. Rather than guessing what your audience types into Google, you can use tools to discover high-volume, relevant keywords and then build content designed to capture that intent.
In this post I explain a simple, repeatable workflow I use: generate keyword ideas with an AI assistant, validate and expand them with Google Ads Keyword Planner, analyze volumes in Excel, then refine services and pages so they attract high-intent visitors.
Keyword research is one of the foundational steps of SEO. As Moz notes in their beginner’s guide, aligning your site structure with user search intent gives you the best chance of ranking.
The workflow overview
- Generate relevant keyword ideas with an AI assistant.
- Validate and get search-volume data using Google Ads Keyword Planner.
- Export and analyze keyword volumes in Excel or Google Sheets.
- Use AI again to craft optimized service names, hubs, and page content based on volume and intent.
- Publish a homepage, a services hub, and separate service pages rich in targeted content.
Step 1 - Start with AI-driven keyword ideation
I begin by telling ChatGPT about the type of website I run, the services I offer, and the markets I target. The prompt asks for relevant, high-volume keyword ideas and often produces a structured list or table of keyword suggestions.
AI can speed up brainstorming and surface long-tail keyword concepts you may not have thought of. For more on how AI fits into content workflows, see OpenAI’s blog on ChatGPT.
Step 2 - Validate and expand using Google Ads Keyword Planner
After I have a list of keyword ideas, I take them to Google Ads Keyword Planner to get real search data. Keyword Planner is free to use after creating a Google Ads account, and you do not need to run ads to access the tool. From the dashboard, go to Tools and then Keyword Planner.
There are two useful ways to work inside Keyword Planner:
- Saved Keywords: Paste the list from ChatGPT into Saved Keywords to get monthly search volumes and trends.
- Keyword Ideas: Enter your website URL to let Google suggest additional keyword ideas that are particularly relevant to your site.
Google’s tool gives you real-world data that helps prioritize keywords by volume, seasonality, and growth. Learn more from Google Ads Help.
Step 3 - Analyze keyword volumes in Excel or Google Sheets
I export the keyword data and open it in Excel. Sorting and filtering by monthly volume, competition, or trend helps identify the best opportunities.
A simple approach:
- Filter for medium to high monthly search volume.
- Prefer keywords with growing interest or stable demand.
- Remove keywords that are irrelevant or impossible to rank for given your site authority.
If you’re new to data manipulation, Microsoft’s Excel support docs walk through how to import and filter CSV data.
Step 4 - Use AI to craft an optimized service structure
With validated search volumes, I go back to ChatGPT and provide the keyword list with volumes. I ask the assistant to propose an optimized set of services and to suggest service page outlines that incorporate those keywords naturally.
The result for me was a clear site structure:
- Five high-growth service categories listed on the homepage.
- A services hub page linking to each category.
- Dedicated pages for each service, packed with keyword-rich, useful content.
This approach aligns content with search intent, which increases the likelihood of attracting high-intent users who convert. For more depth, see Ahrefs’ guide to keyword research.
Step 5 - Implement and monitor
When publishing, follow Google’s SEO best practices:
- Use the primary keyword in the page title and H1 naturally.
- Include related keywords in headings and body content.
- Optimize meta descriptions and internal linking.
- Use structured data where appropriate to help Google understand the content.
Monitor performance using Google Search Console to track impressions, clicks, and ranking changes.
Practical tips and cautions
- Relevance beats volume. A high-volume keyword that draws the wrong audience is less valuable than a moderate-volume keyword that matches your services.
- Use AI for ideation and structure, but manually review everything for accuracy and brand voice.
- Be patient. SEO improvements can take weeks to months to show meaningful organic traffic gains.
Expected outcome
By aligning service pages with validated, high-intent keywords, you can attract more qualified organic traffic. This approach also helps you create a clear site hierarchy that both users and search engines can navigate easily. In my case, the plan was to replace generic service labels with five optimized services on the homepage, create a services hub, and publish detailed, keyword-rich pages for each service. That should drive higher intent visits and, ultimately, conversions.
